Discovering Natural Colour in the Pacific Northwest

Explore 10 natural dye plants local to British Columbia and common throughout the Pacific Northwest. Fibre artist, Serah Hedin will share some of her favorite green allies and the range of colours they produce. The discussion will cover wildcrafting basics, plant identification, and storage as well as the steps of natural dyeing and how to create a natural dye journal. Natural Dye Journaling

Begin your own studies of natural dyes. 8 colours will be created in the workshop. We will discuss discovering colour in nature and historical dye plants. All materials are provided and can be shipped if necessary. This 2 hour class is available as an in-person workshop (group or individual) or remote through Zoom.

 

Introduction to Weaving

Learn how to weave on a frame loom. This workshop provides you with all the tools you will need to begin weaving. All materials are included: handcrafted loom, weaving tools, yarn, weaving booklet. Participants learn different weaving techniques by creating a sampler of their own design. Each in-person workshop is 4 hours long and can be taught to groups or individuals.

 

Cloud Weaving

Create a woven cloud on a shaped frame loom. No prior weaving experience necessary. All materials are provided and can be shipped if necessary. This one hour workshop can be taught in a group or individual setting or remotely through Zoom.

Ombre Effects with Natural Dyes

Play with colour and create ombre effects on finished knits using natural dyes. This course includes a basic knit toque pattern and steps for natural dyeing. The discussion includes 3 natural dyes and how we can find natural colour in the kitchen, and the garden and from ethical suppliers. This two hour class is available online or in studio.
